Feasibility & Project Planning

Question 1.

A feasibility study is conducted to objectively and rationally identify the weaknesses and strengths of a proposed project, opportunities and threats presented in the natural environment, and possible resources needed to complete the project (Mesly, 2017). A feasibility study is the examination of a situation to establish whether the proposed plan or method is reasonable. It is the preliminary study carried out to assess whether or not the planned project is likely to be successful and practical, while it entails estimating its costs (Mesly, 2017). The technical feasibility is among the first studies to be carried out after the project to be undertaken has been identified. A technical study assesses whether software and hardware can meet the needs of a proposed system to be developed. In addition, it relates to ascertaining whether the required technology can help aid in accomplishing milestones that have been suggested (Whitman, 2018).

Organizational feasibility is carried out to establish if the organization has the necessary management expertise, resources, and organizational competence for successfully launching a proposed project. Agarwal and Tayal (2012) point out that organizational feasibility establishes how well a proposed information system supports the organization’s objectives and the strategic plan. The two primary issues considered under organizational feasibility are management prowess and resource sufficiency (Whitman, 2018).  First, management prowess is used to establish the ability of the management team to successfully support and undertake the project to completion. Resource sufficiency is used to establish whether the organization has sufficient resources at its disposal to support the project from start to end. Management prowess is achieved when the management team has a passion for the project ideas and understands them fully.  In general, organizational feasibility focuses on nonfinancial resources available.  

Question 2.

A system development project entails the creation of information systems. In order to develop successful process and systems development projects, the project leader/developer is supposed to create a Work-Breakdown Structure (WBS). According to Donaldson and Siegel (2001), a successful project manager is expected to break large projects into smaller and manageable tasks in order to be in a position to estimate and manage each task.  In addition, each task must result in deliverables. All tasks are interconnected, and to prevent confusion, project teams usually work under a WBS, which is a hierarchy of tasks depending on urgency.

Also, a systems developer must consider the estimated costs and time of project completion.  In order to work within a set time frame and costs, and to avoid the major schedule risks in developing systems business processes and information systems components are incorporated. A project with a start time and completion time, as well as projected costt is easier to cost, complete on time (Donaldson & Siegel, 2001). This also allows resource allocations and the successful completion of systems development projects.

A system developer is supposed to create a project plan, which is a list of all the WBS tasks. The tasks are arranged based on durations and allocated resources. Estimates for task duration as well as the resource requirements are incorporated into the WBS in order to create a project plan Donaldson & Siegel, 2001). In this case, a critical path is used to establish the earliest date for completion of a project. Gao and Rusu (2015) recommend adjusting the plan with trade-offs. A trade-off is simply the act of balancing project requirements, time, and cost. Lastly, all the development challenges must be managed in case the project does not go according to plan.
