Can Roman Curse Tablets Be Used to Support an Argument Either for Creolisation or Discrepant Identities?

The Roman curse tablets or defixiones are archaeological artefacts found in different areas around Britain dating from the Roman era. These tablets, made of lead and inscribed with curses are “epigraphic communication between people and their gods” (Mattingly, 2011, p. 228). The uniqueness of these tablets lies in the fact that this Roman practice had been adapted and adopted by Britons. The curse tablets are believed to be the products of the intercultural interactions between the occupiers (Romans) and the occupied Britons, and are an illustration of what is known as ‘Romanisation.’
